Senator Pelosi: It is clear to many Americans that our government has been sold out by the two major parties to corporate interests who manipulate our opinions through their ownership of the means of communication, particularly TV and, to a lesser extent, radio. The current campaign for the presidency and make up of Congress prove the point. Democrats may win big in the upcoming elections but only because they are the one viable alternative and there is no doubt that they will come to be held in just as much contempt as we now hold the entrenched Republicans. Then the Republicans will take over again in a vicious cycle of trade-offs of dominance between these two parties. Meanwhile, both parties vie to be all things to all voters which only creates irreconcilable conflicts of interests that we, as voters, should not have to compromise on. The only apparent way to break this pattern and deal with those conflicts is to assure multiple parties that truly represent the interests of their constituencies without forcing us to conform to unacceptable compromises imposed on us by the party leadership in order to preserve the party. As a leader of ruling Democrats do you feel it is more important to preserve the party as one half of the status quo power structure or would you be willing to share your power with more than one other political party if this means preserving our democracy, perhaps at the expense of the two-party system?

Again, the Democrats and Republicans both are not going to fix this problem from within. They have no incentive to. What we need is the National Initiative. Let the PEOPLE have the power to make legislation and impeach people from office. Then we'll see how much partisan politics will remain. www.ni4d.us. I'm 100% sure that Pelosi won't support the National Initiative either. Nor will most of the rest of the politicians in office today. They are all FAR too cozy in their current positions. It's time to give more power to the people so we can move this country in the right direction.
I agree that the current party structures do not lend themselves to true democracy, but I believe there may be different solutions than the one presented. As I remember from history, many founders were concerned about forming parties because of the fear of monopoly and duopoly. I wonder if instant run-off voting would help. There have to be other ideas out there.
I appreciate that Democrats and Republicans have no incentive to give up anything that would weaken their stranglehold on power. I had not heard of the National Initiative before and I'm not convinced that it is the best solution. Maybe so. I have to look into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Meanwhile, I feel it is important to give the current lawmakers an opportunity to state their position on this important point. Let them try to explain why they are so committed to their party even when they act against the interest of the country. And why should voters commit to a political party when doing so demands compromising on issues that we are passionate about. If we wish to influence the lawmakers in this "democracy" we currently have to buy into a platform that conflicts with our own political stands. As progressives this just maddening and it assures that we will never have a strong voice on those issues that define us.
I don't expect either of the duopoly duet to release their stranglehold on our former democracy that has become a plutocracy of the corporate elite. The only option is a constitutional convention. But in spite of more than the required states requesting Congress to call a an Article V Constitutional convention, which makes them in violation of the Constitution, they still will not obey the will of the people. There has to be a way to compel Congress to obey the constitution. 1. Dump everybody currently in office, and only vote for candidates that will swear to call for the convention, once elected. 2. 3/4 of the states must combine in a class action federal lawsuit against Congress to compel them to follow the Constitution in calling for an Article V convention.
Of course this will never as long as the American voter continues to dance to the two party tune.
If Democrat & Republican elected officials would
forsake corporate interests, support clean
elections, keep jobs in the USA, put America
before party, obey the Constitution, support
an Article V convention, they would become
Independents.

You are right on the button, until we can get both or all parties of goverment to work together this county will continue to go down the drain. I don't have an answer and do not understand a lot of what is disscussed in some of the other comments, but do know when something is broke you fix it or throw it away. I am afraid to many Politicians would rather give it away than try and get it right.
