Will Congress drastically improve Amtrak's budget?

Madam Speaker, I'm one of your constituents in San Francisco. I don't need to own a car in this great city, but I've noticed that going out-of-town is slow and cumbersome without one. Will Amtrak be improved during my lifetime? It may not be profitable, but the highway system sure isn't profitable! When will we see high-speed rail on the West Coast? Mexico's getting it. France has it. Why can't we get it, too? Thanks.

This is a very good question. Now is a perfect time to make train travel more viable and popular here in the US.

And the Speaker might be relieved to answer this question after all the hardball FISA and impeachment questions.

Along with better international train travel - the only access to Canada comes via Niagra Falls, yet hundreds commute every day from Michgian to Ontario and vice versa, via bridges congested with traffic. Why this hasn't happened yet befuddles me.

Archmeg, one can also take the train from Vancouver to Seattle, but on two trips I've taken the train has been replaced by a bus due to some technical error or other. That's unacceptable in other developed countries.

Why ask the government to provide you with travel by train? Why not ask them to provide you with a car?

The government, that is your fellow American taxpayers, pay for it either way, right?

Most other developed countries are more socialist than we are.

    But we are catching up.

    bojo1235,

Which would you (the taxpayer) rather pay for: One car per adult or one train per 600 adults? A vehicle that gets 20mpg or one that gets 468 passenger miles per gallon?
